Sweet Child Pt 3

--- Elder God’s Tent, Main Camp ---

*With his hero unconscious and safely asleep in Inari’s tent, Thanatos makes his way to check on Inari and Paramae, who had retreated to the tent that the two elder gods hard shared in order to talk things out. Lightly pulling aside the tent opening, he finds Paramae asleep on one of the beds, while the younger god sits at the edge, staring into the distance. They are pulled from their musings as Thanatos steps inside and quickly inclines their head in greeting to the Elder God*

Inari: Forgive me, I was lost in thought. Have you finished your talk with Rozyus?

Thanatos: Indeed, that child is as stubborn as his mother sometimes.

*He sighed running his hands through his hair like a somewhat old habit*

But… Well how was your discussion i can imagine a weight has been lifted from both of you, no?

*Inari gives a wiry smile*

Inari: Well, it wasn’t a long talk, but….it was needed. For Mother more than myself, I fear. While I understand the need for frustrating secrecy at times, for one who ‘sees’ as much as she….as you both do, I imagine it weighs very heavily on the soul. I may have lead this task force in battle, and born the victories and losses as needed, but you two must bear that and more, foreseeing what may happen, yet unable to directly interfere beyond what your heroes can accomplish. And sometimes not being able to interfere even then, lest it’s the wrong choice

*He puts a hand over his heart*

Inari: Mother learned that the hard way, I suppose.

Thanatos: Very hard indeed.

*The elder god lies down on his own bed, pulling out a pipe and offering one to the younger god before lighting his own. Taking a deep breath, before letting out a satisfied exhale*

Thanatos: I suppose… you heard the tale of your… rebirth, yes? And why she's more protective of you than her own offspring.

Inari: Not in a large amount of detail, but enough that I understand. It is…ah….a little disturbing to think that you are actually the recycled remnants of several broken souls. That they all had their own lives, wants and dreams and that you now, somehow, embody them all. It makes one feel….a little unsure of oneself?

Thanatos: *Chuckle* If you knew of, or had a glimpse of their past encounters…well, I say that there's no real difference between the three goddesses. They might as well have been one person. Though I will say the love bird comedy act was as cute now as it was back then. Hahaha. So don't worry about it. ‘You’ were the same now as you were back then - well, minus the separate entries.

Inari: I sometimes wondered if my soul contained gods as well as goddesses at times. More often than not I have not felt any gender. Though I suppose being a male or female if I so chose is a plus. It is….ah….fun to tease your hero, just a little.

*They laugh lightly*

Thanatos: Ah and that little one is all the goddesses and a sirten god speaking. Sometimes i did feel sorry for that servant boy. When you all teased him like that. But then i remembered how cute he was when he turned red and i could clearly see why you did it hahahah.

*Inari, who was just about to smoke the pipe, blinks, then looks over incredulously.*

Inari: Wha-all of us? Oh dear, that poor servant. I imagine one of me is difficult to handle at times. I can hardly imagine dealing with a small harem of me.

Thanatos: well there were two of you that kept the piece, i won't lie the was one of you that the servant boy did attach himself to allot more, caused a few arguments here and there. Oh what was it again. ‘So and so you're stealing him from the rest of us! Hes ours to share. Just because you have that cool  indifferent aura about, im more beautiful come here servent boy and we'll ‘play’ together.’

*Inari flops back on the bed, howling with laughter*

Inari: Oh poor boy! So many feel that having many wishing for your attention is a good thing, but that poor servant must have been so worn out dealing with them….us all.

*Suddenly, they begin to grin and twist to look at the elder god*

Inari: *Teasingly* So…..did I get all the good parts of them, then, Lord Thanatos?

Thanatose: *Chuckleing* Oh yes, your flirtatiousness, your smarts and beauty definitely come from the goddesses. The ‘cool indifference’ from the favored god. And your fighting ability and cooler tone are definitely from the other god.

*Thanatos breathes deep before looking down for the moment*

And also your devotion to that boy, it was ultimately there death that caused their downfall. Love will do that to the mightiest of us. In truth, that was the reason why we wanted to separate the two of you by having him incarnate later but… well, a certain someone had to make dear Paramae fertile, didn't we? *Chuckle* Ah well, we let it be because you both were cute together. Besides, training him in this life… well, it's a different type of entertaining, if you catch my drift.

*Inari hums in agreement, eyes half lidded. They could understand why their previous selves had been so destroyed by the death of that loved one that they had followed through with what eventually shattered their souls. And, while a little flustering, Inari would never regret giving Paramae the spark needed for her and her partner to conceive. For a moment, they fell silent, focusing on the smoke from the pipe and the calm stillness of the room*

Thanatos: It seems we may have to change topic soon. One of our sleeping beauties is about to wake.

*The elder goddess began to stir slightly, her eyes slowly fluttering awake as they adjusted to the dim light of the tent. Quickly, Inari sits up once more, leaning over to check on her*

Inari: Mother? Are you well?

Paramae: *Burrowing back into the covers* Ummmmn….

*A grin crossing their face, they begin to lightly poke Paramae’s cheek*

Inari: Mooooooother! Heeeeeey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Wakey wakey!

Parame: UMMMMMNNN!!!

*With a firm kick, the younger god is shoved of the bed as she buries deeper into the sheets. Despite the fact they fell to the floor with an ‘Oof’ it barely phases them. They pop back up with a mischievous grin in their eyes. Grabbing the corners of the sheets, he quickly yank them from her*

Inari: Aaaaaand my magic trick…

*The goddess has gone from the bed*

Inari: The Amazing Disappearing Mother…

*Looking up, their grins as, above their head is the sheets all wrapped up, with Paramae somehow inside*

*Parame’s eyes, now fully awake, intensely glow within the shade of the sheets.*

Parame: Stupid child of mine. Can’t you let an old woman have her sleep…? H-honestly *yawn*

*Her eyes growing heavy once more, before Inari’s grin widens, headless to the threat - or rather, completely ignoring it*

Inari: And my second trick - the Bounding Burrito!

*With that he drops her back on the bed hard enough that she bounces several times.*

Parame: AGGGHHH!!! I swear if you wernt my child….

*She grabs a pillow and repeatedly strikes the child with it until a cloud of feathers erupts from their cotton cage. This only has the Child laughing as they defend themselves from the onslaught only halfheartedly*

Inari: *Playfully* Oh no! The pain! I is dead! Blegh!

*They flop to the ground, still laughing.*

*She glares at the younger god, still moody from being woken from her slumber. A hearty chuckle echos around the chamber, accompanied by two claps*

Thanatos: Now, now children. I think it’s time we get serious for the moment no?

*Pulling themselves up from the floor and suddenly back on the bed as if nothing had happened, Inari idly plucks the down from the pillow out of their long hair with a surprising amount of dignity*

Inari: Of course, sir. My apologies.

Thanatos: No no its fine. But i do feel that there are now some important things that need to be discussed.

Parame: Like how your chat with that boy went?

Thanatos: Naturally.

*Whatever playfulness had still been in Inari’s eyes abruptly vanishes, becoming fully serious once more*

Inari: I know that he had suggested certain things to me after the gods had left us last night. I know he’s been greatly frustrated, even though he had spend some of it trying to assure me he was unharmed. To become a target as he was….It certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in oneself, especially when he was here to test his abilities. And after he had done so well in  the meetings…

Thanatos: Indeed, it is as you may suspect. He was greatly frustrated with me, feeling that I had been holding back in his training. Though he was not entirely wrong - there are some lessons that can only be learned if one experiences them for himself.

Parame: Like the full weight of your presence? You know how dangerous that was Thanatos?! What is something happened to that child!!!

Thanatos: If I didn’t believe him to be ready, I would not have done so. However, while that lesson is true, there is another - emotion. It is one thing to be told that you must learn to control your emotions, but another to truly realise it. And not in the way that you do, Inari

*Inari flinches ever so slightly, but stays silent*

Thanatos: His power relies on control of his emotions and the determination to follow through with what must be done, despite the odds, despite great fear, despite the unknown. By allowing the boy to feel my aura, to be able to withstand it and yet to face it, even bombarded by fear and the End To All Things….well, it provided a test for both. One that he passed. Marginally. He still has a long way to go before he will truly surpass this next hurdle

Parame: And how long to you asume that will take?

Thanatos: That depends on his strength, now doesn’t it? Speaking of, I’m afraid that Rozyus used a lot of energy for my test and needed to rest. Inari, it would probably be best if he is not alone, just in case. I do rather doubt that He would try again, given the protections I left behind, but…

Inari *standing* I understand. Its best not to seem alone after such a fright anyway, especially weakened after withstanding the aura of a greater god. Unless My Lady has further use of me, I’ll be sure to take care of him. I couldn’t do otherwise, after all.

*Despite the smile, there was a distracted worry in their eyes, already focused on their love rather than in the room with the elder gods*

Parame: Go, do as you will, ‘tis ‘the husband's duty’, after all. Go be with him for now, but report to me if anything happens.

Inari: *Somewhat relieved, even as he offers a quick bow* Of course. By your leave.

*With that, they gracefully, but quickly, leave the tent, already focused on the task of caring for their lover. Once he was out of earshot...*

Parame: So… what was the reason you needed that child’s absence?

*Thanatos takes a breath, releasing it, his expression settling into something far more serious*

Thanatos: It is less the test itself and what came before it. Particularly who we were discussing before this. Listening to the boy speak of him, and combined with her habitual distrust of you, Rozyus confided to me that there was a part of him that truly sympathised with his plight. But, while that is, while worrying, understandable, considering his silver tongue and what he now knows of that god, he fell silent for a long time afterwards. Had it been in deep thought, I might not have been concerned - there is much to think of with all the information he has learned - but that look in his eye...I had reason to believe he was not alone in his mind.

Parame: …. I wouldn't put it past him to have set up a telepathic link to that child... and us attempting to stop him would only push him further to his side… The only thing we can do is watch over him and monitor the situation for now.

Also… don’t let Inari have wind of this… I want to avoid ‘that’ incident at all costs.

*Thanatos, thinking back to the conversation he had with Inari earlier, closes his eyes, resigned*

Thanatos [Inner Thoughts]:  ‘Not being able to interfere with your heroes in case things go more awry’ indeed….What we want here does not matter. All we can do now is wait and hope that our trust in him does not go to waste, that his love for Inari might sway him away from that God’s desires….If we lose one of them, it will shatter them both…

Sweet Child Pt 2

--- Inari’s Tent, Main Camp ---

Rozyus: Tell Me! You’ve been stalling my progress for a while now, master, and I know you’ve been doing it on purpose! I'm sick of it! stop treating me like a child!

*The boy is standing before the God of death, hands clenched and expression twisted with stubbornness and anger as he confronts his Master. Thanatos remains still, expression unmoved by Rozyus’ passion. He is a patient god and, knowing that this talk has long been overdue, waits for Rozyus to finish his argument and prove himself capable of handling what is to come next*

Rozyus: I… I pushed back the darkness in my own heart… I helped light the fire in the soldiers hearts, gave them a way to fight for themselves and confront ‘His’ seduction. Is that not enough? Yes, I was about to be consumed by the darkness, but I was standing strong on my side of his realm… I didn't slip… Am...am I just a lesser being after all? Are my actions not enough, Master?

*Thanatos closes his eyes with a sigh, before motioning for the younger man to sit*

Thanatos: It is, indeed, true that there is a lot more I can teach you. However, I have not been ‘holding you back’ because you are ‘lesser’. After all, heroes I have had in the past have been far ‘less’ than you whom I have lead to other levels at a faster pace, and I have had beings who have had purer blood or higher standings within the council of gods whom have needed far longer than you to progress. No, your standings or blood are not what is causing you to be held back. Rather, it has nothing to do with physical ability at all.

*In a quick, flourishing movement, Thanatos had summoned his weapon and used the hilt to prod Rozyus on the forehead*

Thanatos: No, what is holding you back is this - your own mind.

Rozyus: HUMPH! I’m unstable, is that what you’re saying?

*Eyes turned away, the boy sits at the far end of the sofa, tucking in his limbs, trying to make himself as small as he felt*

*Thanatos smacks him over the head with the hilt - not enough to seriously injure, but sharp enough to snap him from whatever thoughts he was spiraling into*

Thanatos: That, there, is the problem. With the slightest words, you crumbled into yourself. What holds you back is how you see yourself, and how you control your emotions - or rather, how you don’t. And no, suppressing them is not controlling them. I would have thought you know this from the times Inari used to let loose after suppressing their feelings for so long. For people like them, whose power does not come from an emotional source, it is not so detrimental, and they can afford the occasional slip so long as they do not lose control over their abilities. But for those whose power is tied so closely to their emotions, to their minds and thoughts, they must be able to control their mental states, lest they unleash a power on the world by pure accident.

*Thanatos sighs and sits beside Rozyus, running an apologetic hand through his hair, soothing the injury he had caused with a cool hand*

Thanatos: I am not ‘holding you back’ because I do not care or think you are weak, Rozyus. Rather, I think you have the potential to be one of the strongest heroes. However, if you are to reach that potential, your mind must be prepared to face anything, no matter what happens, what is said, or even what you might turn onto yourself.

Rozyus: It's hard to have the the confidence of the gods when your whole life gods and other beeing have been telling you other wise, i’ve livl.ed most my life being oppressed. So even if you say kind words like I’m on equal futting how am i supposed to believe it… if i didn't have them as a tether tieing me to this world i would have happily joined those whom we goven. I won't lie Master… ‘His’ offer was tempting, really tempting. But i felt that if i danced with him for even a moment i would never see my love again.. I wouldn't have the right to. But…

Thanatos: There will always be a part of you, a part of everyone, that might sympathise with him. And, because of what he was, he would never control a person to do so against their will, since it would harm what he stands for. However, he is a master of words, able to twist things to make people believe what he has to say, that they might follow of their own volition. Once they do, he has them trapped. He is like a candle flame to a moth. He can shine a light that is so very tempting, and draws people in, only for them to willingly walk to their own doom. And, it is true, there are many who have done so already. However, as a Hero, as one who has power over the soul, we cannot be swayed. Death is the ultimate equalizer, so it must be calm and capable of seeing all sides. However, Death is also part of the balance of this world. It cannot be swayed to a side that will upset that.

*Thanatos narrows his eyes slightly as he looks upon his student*

Thanatos: You have heard what he has done. While his actions may have cause, what he did, what he is still doing, will not only upset the balance, will not only harm those on our side, but will harm himself as well. If you sympathise with him, remember that, by stopping him, you will be saving him. But, it goes beyond that. And you have yet to see it.

Tell me, hero, what is it you fight for? What is it that you wish to use your power for? Is it for fame, that you might prove yourself as ‘better’ than other gods? Is it only for the love of one person, and you would stand by, allowing others to be destroyed around you so long as that one person remains alive? Or is it for the sake of the souls whom are innocent, yet caught in the middle of the war and suffer for it. At the moment, you blame people that you are ‘untethered’, yet, I wonder, have you, yourself, attempted to find your own bonds? Or do you simply bow to Fate, and say ‘That’s just how it is’?

*The boy balled his fists claws digging in t his soft flesh almost drawing blood, anger washed over for a moment, then calm. He had to keep his cool, less he prove his master right. After all he was right about ‘That Man’ and yet deep down he felt like something was still wrong… missing some how.*

Rozyus [Inner though]: I need to speak to him again. Somehow, as manipulative as he is, there’s something still missing. I mean, his words… He let something slip that he shouldn’t have, I can feel it.

*Faded words whisper though his mind*

‘..Haha, you spit in the face of the one that would give you that will in the first place...’

‘No, you won’t be a puppet’

‘Will you curse and blame-?’

‘What will be reflected in your eyes?’

*The boy sighed inwardly, his brow knitted *

Rozyus [Inner though]: I have a feeling you were talking about yourself, weren't you?

Voice: My, aren’t we confident?

*Thanatos does not react to this voice. It seems to be one that only Rozyus can hear. A voice only recently become familiar*

Voice: You truly believe that you can come to meet with me and all will be revealed in a nicely presented package. Your naivety amuses me. However, I will give you a chance to see just how wrong your views truly are. In three days hence, meet me at the lost grounds, dead of life from battle, at the sun’s dying breath. Come alone. Though I doubt you would bring anyone anyway. They would consider you insane, or a traitor. And the only one you would trust with this, I would twist and break until there is nothing left. Only you will be granted this temporary ceasefire.

Rozyus [Inner though]: Fine. But I want your word as a god - whatever pride you have left as a god - that you swear to me that you won’t pull anything. I just want to know the truth… your truth. There’s something about this that doesn’t sit well with me.

Voice: Ah, then this is less about me and more about just how your dear mother may have twisted things? How lowly you think of your own blood. Very well, do as you -heh - will. I wonder, will you break? Or will you become so wrapped in your own delusion of the truth that no words will sway you. I will enjoy seeing you struggle.

*With that, the voice, and the presence that was with it, fades from Rozyus’ mind*

Rozyus: *Sigh* Master…. I understand… i know i can’t save everybody but, i do believe just defeating him is wrong. Yes i hold my love ones dear, there's no one above that, and yes i would like to prove to those that doubt me but… i feel that in order for this war to truly be over and the sickle to brake, we need to save him. We need to bring him back to the light.

*Thanatos’ eyes narrow slightly for a moment, though what exactly he was thinking does not show on his face. However, even if he had not heard what Rozyus had, the fact that he had gone silent was suspicious in and off itself.*

Thanatos: That indecisiveness is another factor. However, you believe you might ‘change’ him? Or that you can subdue him, perhaps, to make him see reason? Do you not believe others have not tried the same? However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

*He flips his lantern weapon once more, then holds it out to Rozyus.*

Thanatos: A test, then. Take my weapon, and walk towards me. I will not strike at you physically, nor will I offer any obstacle but one - I will not reign in my aura. If you can carry my lantern to me, then we’ll see just how prepared you really are. Will you accept?

*As the boy reached out towards the rear end of the lantern, touching its icy cold handle, an overwhelming sense of dread cloaked him. He could see his master walking to the end of the room, but, looking with his ‘other eyes’, he could see his masters true self. His presence was unlike any he had encountered before; far greater than even his mother’s. The physical form of ‘Nothing’, The End and the Beginning. Death itself stood before him, and, if he truly wished to press forward, he would need to prove his worth. An empty smile painted Lord Thanatos’s lips as he sat dominant at Inari’s desk. Mockingly, he crowed.*

Thanatos: What’s wrong, Rozyus? Why do you not approach? Is this all the strength of will you have to offer? Where is that resolve? Where is that strength you so raged that you possess? Is this as far as you can bring yourself to go, Child of Fate?

Rozyus: D-damn you, Master!

*He was shaking now, the sheer force of his master’s Presence was truly something to behold. Attempting to pick up the weapon, he felt its pure weight. He Remembered what he had said to his love, months ago.*

‘You should have seen it. Master’s weapon - not even the son of Zeus could lift it. It only responds to Master himself… But, I’ve heard that there is a trick to make it bend to one’s will. But what it is, I don’t quite know.’

‘I get it, so that’s why..’

Rozyus: Ah! *mutters* I see, the same rules apply here, huh?

*The boy seemed to relax his form, mimicking the stance of his Master. He allowed all the negativity in his heart to disperse, for the moment, and flow out of him. Only reason remained. Slowly closing his eye, he releases his presence, pushing it as far as it could go. It was barely a light push in comparison to the Elder God's presence, but it offered him some protection… Eyes still closed, he reached for the weapon. It seemed to respond to him some what, its weight only slightly easing. The boy daintily gripped the handle, twirling it, reminiscent of the time he performed the parlor trick for the troubled soldiers. It did take nearly all his strength, but he took a step, then another, then another towards his master. The air itself began to feel heavy. The boy struggled, staggering, stepping closer and closer  until his legs could no longer support him  and he fell to one knee.*

*Sighing, Thanatos stands from his perch*

Thanatos: After all that talk, is this really all you can do? You have not even reached half way, and yet you are on your knees before me. No matter how much you brag, you can see the evidence as plain as day - you are not ready, nor are you prepared, for the next step. How….disappointing. I was expecting more from you. But it would seem your bark was far louder than the strength to back it.

*Shaking his head, the god turns to leave.*

Thanatos: When you honestly have the strength, then I will stop holding back on you. But for now, I’m sure you are aware of what you are truly lacking.

Rozyus: *Panting* Oh s-shut up already! You better sit your ass back down ‘n’ wait till I get there!

*Eyes still closed, he clutches his chest,*

Rozyus [Inner Thought]: He’s so strong… too strong… but there must be a way I can… wait. What if I don’t fight his presence? Death is inevitable, right? Who was it that told me I could run or succumb to it…? I won’t run. Yes, he’s stronger, but that doesn’t mean I need to fight him. I just need to get there, that’s all. So… so…

*The boy attempts to stand; his first attempt ending in failure as he felt his body give under the sheer pressure of his Master’s presence. His second attempt was slightly better. Supported by the staff, he presses forward once more. He relaxes his presence, letting it trail off into nothing. He needed a clear mind and no distractions for this to work. One step, two steps, he was getting closer. He abandons the weapon and continued to press forward,  rhythmically twirling the phantom presence of the staff as needed.  The actions were enough. He didn't need the physical weapons for his plan, but the movement were important. He could feel himself reaching the end of his destination, the cold wood of the desk’s light touched his flesh.*

Rozyus: ....This is the extent of my resolve, I’m afraid, but I won’t let it rule me… no chance. So, as long as I can see a sliver of hope, as long as I know there’s a chance I can win, no matter how small, I will take it. And I will do what’s right. I’m strong enough to.

*He opened his eyes*

Rozyus: Now *Said with conviction* COME!

*With the snap of his fingers, the staffed weapon flies into his hands. The boy’s stance changes, this time more confident and controlled. His eyes snap open, the colour radiates with its glow. It seems to flicker with a divine light. He points the staffed end to his master.*

Rozyus: Your weapon, my Lord.

*A small smile crosses Thanatos’s face as he reached forwards and took the staff from Rozyus’ grip*

Thanatos: Much better. Now do you understand? What was holding you back?

Rozyus: Y-yeah….

*As he replied, he could see black spots clouding his vision. The relief after reaching his destination had gotten the best of him, and he collapses shortly after. With a quick movement, Thanatos had his arm around the boy’s middle, preventing him from falling to the ground, his presence cloaked once more. With a snort of amusement, Thanatos carries the boy towards Inari’s bed and lays the boy upon it, lightly draping one of the blankets over his still form*

*He looks down at the boy for a long moment, his pride in the boy slowly fading as he remembers, with trepidation, that long moment of silence from before*

Thanatos: The strength you have found….I only hope that it will not be in vain….Too much is at stake, for everyone involved…But even so, there is only so much I can do. Your fate now is up to you.

Sweet Child

--- Unknown Location, Main Camp, Post Mind Attack ---

*A few hours go by and the sun's harsh light creeps over the horizon, and the campsite began to spring to life once more. Soldiers began to rebuild what was damaged in the encounter with the the foes forces. Small as it was, the destruction and power difference was still evident. The two of the elder gods began to make their way back to the Child’s tent. The male stopped her a little ways before the tent, taking a deep breath before sighing.*

Lord Thanatos: I don’t like this one bit...This getting too risky for these children, it's even fraying their fate lines.

Mother: That be as it may, even if we were to hide them away, he is aware of them. If he could reach my son through his dreams, then it is entirely possible that he can reach them anywhere if we were to remove them from this entirely. Even if I wanted to, it is out of our hands. The best we can do now is be sure we prepare them for what is to come, your hero, and mine.

Lord Thanatos: That not what I meant, Paramae. We need to tell the children, at least to their level of understanding. We won't tell them everything for now, but we should at least tell them what they're really fighting for, before you become incompatible with your hero…. You know what happened last time. How painful it was, and how we were barely able to stitch their souls back together…. What was left was barely able to create one being.

*Paramae sighs and closes her eyes for a moment*

Paramae: I am….aware. It is not something I could ever forget. It is why I act as I do towards them both, especially to Inari. I never wish to put them through that again, even if they may never recall it themselves….However, telling them too much at the same time could do the same thing. It is something of a trap, no matter what I do. I only hope a solution presents itself to me...

Lord Thanatos:  That's why I said to tell them to their level of understanding. It doesn't mean we should tell them everything quite yet. If we remain silent then nothing good shall come of it. It’s why we were as ill prepared as we were when the attack happened… As worried as I am, as we are, we should not let things get to us the way they have. It’s not good for our heros. And for our sanity, as well. You'd think after all this time we would become numb to all of this… but, then, it feels like the winds are changing…

Paramae: No one could become numb to it. I suspect neither could he. If he had, then I believe things might never have come to this at all. *She opens her eyes once more, before nodding to Thanatos* Very well, I shall follow your lead on this, if only because I’m aware that Rozyus will not hear me yet, but he will you. This is not to say I’ll say nothing, of course. Only that we will go at your pace. However, if I forsee something that could be avoided by not telling them something, I hope you will trust my word in return.

Lord Thanatos: *Chuckle* of course.

*The pair approach the tent but are then halted for a moment by loud voices coming from with in*

Voice 1: Don’t you think you’ve looked over me enough? We should be getting ready they’ll be here soon.

Voice 2: I don’t believe I could ever ‘look you over’ too much. But….joking aside, I know. There isn’t anything I could do, even if there was something wrong. I suppose it’s more for peace of mind? That if there was something, we could inform them straight away. Still, I’m sorry. Thank you for putting up with me.

Voice 1: That would have been kind of sweet if you weren't still groping me! Geeez! Look *Voice gets softer* I told you, I’m fine. I’ll come running if something happens, ‘k? So…. CAN WE PLEASE get out of this position already!!!!
*Voice 2 laughs softly. There is a sound of skin striking skin - a slap - before the second voice laughs more and there is further sounds of fabric being thrown against someone - the owner of the first voice.*

Voice 1: You damn perverted God of Fertility! That it, I’m sleeping in a different tent tonight! Dummy! Stupid, stupid ‘Nari! Just when I think you’re being sweet, Geeez.

Voice 2: Careful, Rozy-dear. People might think you happen to enjoy it.

Voice 1: AAAAAAAAH!!!! Thats it im getting changed, you, you, you!

*A loud crashing sound, followed by what seemed to be a pillow repeatedly striking someone, is heard for a time, followed by a laughter. Finally, things settle down.*

Lord Thanatos: Should we give them a moment? It seems as if they’re… in the middle of something, no?

Paramae: One does not need to know the future to know that much. It’s almost startling that Inari has kept their word at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them was not aware we are here, though.

Lord Thanatos: *Deep chuckle* Most likely. They’re that infatuated with each other it dosent dosent surprise me. Their past selves were like that, too. I won’t lie, it’s entertaining to watch.
That imbecilic, love bird, comedy act.

Paramae: Ah yes, young love….no matter how many times I witness it, it is always just as funny and absolutely adorably dorky as always. I wonder which of them might come to greet us first once they’re *ahem* ready.

*As if on cue, a disheveled  boy bursts out from the tent, screaming*

Rozious: THAT’S IT! GO TAKE A COLD SHOWER YOU MONGREL! HORNDOG!!!

Lord Thanatos: Ah.. it would appear my young shadow is our greeter this fine morning.

Rozyus: Huh? Master?  You’re here already? I was expecting...You’re quite early. Is everything…?

Lord Thanatos: *Chuckle* It would appear you and yours are enjoying yourselves, yes?

*In a panic the boy temporarily loses the ability to speak cheeks burning of the thought of how much his master over heard, moments later the kiss of pink that painted his cheeks turned into a brilliant crimson as he felt the warmth of his partner drape around him*

Inari: You do realise exactly who it is that we’re dealing with here, right? They would know, whether we were ‘vocal’ or not’

*The Child looked over at the two elder gods before inclining their head*

Inari: Greetings, Lord Thanatos, Mother. I apologize for the display. I suppose I was hoping to keep the atmosphere….light?

*Loard Thanasose cocs a n eyebrow trying to controle the grin that threatened to form, feebly attempting to smother his laughter*

Lord Thanatos: You claim to apologize, yet you’re still holding him so tightly in our presence.

*Inari offers a semi smirk which is partly hidden by Rozyus’ shoulder*

Inari: I believe there was enough of a scare last night to warrant my closeness, don’t you think? Of course, if it’s an official order to let go…?

*They speak somewhat flippantly, but there is a hint of a deeper pain in their words, obviously still affected by the helplessness they had felt the day before, however well hidden they made it*

Lord Thanatos: Hmm...no, not an order. Do with him as you will.

Rozyus: MASTER!

Inari: See? You worry too much about propriety, my love. It is somewhat funny that my culture is meant to be the more reserved. Relax. Your Master does not mind.

Rozyus: He may not ,but I do!!! Jeez, let’s at least go inside - we’re building up an audience here.

*The boy gestures over to some familiar drunken faces, a few of them have slight tears in  their eyes, but attempt to block the path of others coming towards the tent.*

*Inari looks over to them with a dull expression*

Inari: Aaaaaaaand…..I’m supposed to caaaaaare….how?

Rozyus: GEEEZ! The Great Deity, acting like this… Get Offa ME! *Struggle, struggle* Geez, why are you so damn strong!!!! *Huff huff* Damn it, I give up…

Inari: *Practically purring* Glad you see it my way. Anyway, we probably should go inside. I imagine that what we need to talk about will be a heavy subject and should not be privy to just any ears. Not to mention I imagine that Lord Thanatos and Mother have important places to be soon enough.

Mother: A shame to cut this short, but yes, it would be for the best. We have much to discuss.

Rozyus: *Sigh* Very well…

*A short time later, the boy sets down tea for the two gods, himself and the Child. The room is silent, not one soul says a word, the only sound the crackle of the fire and the faint heart beats of each of those present.*

*Eventually, however, Inari sighs and places down their tea gracefully, before speaking up, finally breaking the uncomfortable silence*

Inari: We all know this is not a social visit. May I ask that we get to the point?

Lord Thanatos: You enquired last time to know the truth...the origin of the war, and about ‘him’, correct? But, I’m afraid we can’t tell you everything quite yet. You see, this tale is quite complicated. However, we do feel that it would be in your best interest to at least enlighten you.

Paramae: We only ask that you will listen, and that if we say we cannot tell you more, you will understand. We do this for your own good. Not even other gods could truly understand the truth that only we elder gods know. Suffice to say, in time, we will tell you the full truth. We only ask for your patience until then.

Rozyus: Get on with it, before I decide to leave.

Inari: As much as I’d rather not have in fighting, Rozyus has a point. What is this ‘truth’? At least as much as we can know of it. And why is it that we’re unable to hear all of it now? Why is it hidden from the other gods as well?

Thanatos: Because, knowing too much, too quickly, would be the same as throwing a child into deep water and expecting it to swim. A difficult task at best and deadly outcome a worst. Rest assured, we will tell you the full details in time, but as for now… please, just have faith in us, as your masters, as our heros.

*Taking a deep breath, Inari nods*

Inari: Alright. Please, tell us what you can.

*The hours seem to tick by. Tea now gone cold and the expressions on both heros faces flicker from shock, to anger, to pity. The small bit of truth presented onto their lap hurt, but at the end of the god’s tale, all that was left was empathy. The Child looked up at their Master. She seemed to be attempting to compose herself. Though she had not shed a tear, her eyes were red. Biting her lips and nails digging into her balled fists. They could see the face of guilt that washed over her. It was a hard story to tell, but she told it all the same. Once her tale was done, she looked up to face their eyes...*

Paramae: I do not ask that you understand why things happened the way they did. However, can you see, at least, why this tale is not so wide spread?

Rozyus: ... Yes…

*Lord Thanatos, stood up before stretching out his hand to her, bring her to her feet as well. She seemed almost lifeless at she looked at him.*

Lord Thanatos: I believe it would be best if we break up into two i believe there are things you wish to speak with Paramae in confidence. Use one of the tents we were assigned you won't be disturbed there young one.

*Inari, who had been oddly quiet, eyes distant and expression oddly blank, nodded in understanding.*

Inari: I…..Yes, I understand. Mother and I….will have a lot we need to….to talk about.

Paramae: ...So it seems. Thanatos, I’ll leave your hero to you.

*Boths parties exchange a look before departing, the sun seemed to beat down on the two now as they made their way to the elder gods tent. As they stepped into the tent she eemed to collapse on the nearest sofer. Her once radiant skin looked pale in the ambiant light, the younger god approched her kneeling beside her and clutching her hand, she faintly squeezed back. The tears seemed endless, centuries old tears, the pain of lost love, the loss of life that had been snuffed out because of countless wars, and the guilt… the memory that haunted her till this day. *

Inari: I’m sorry…..If I could take this pain…...but…. *They take a breath and pull Paramae a little closer* To think that could have happened. It is no surprise that he was so fixated on Rozyus. *They close their eyes* ...Mother, am I partly to blame for this?

Paramae: No… he would have been after that boy one way or another… but, that is not what pains my heart the most.

*She combs her fingers through their hair, holding them tighter.*

Paramae: No matter what happens, please, I beg that you always be one with me, mind and sole…. I- I could not bare it. I lost them once, I do not want to lose you again. I was barely able to save you all last time, I-! *Gasp*

*She bite her tongue there, she forced the words to stay within her but in doing so pushed more tears out. The Child's eyes looked down art her flickering between surprise and sympathy.*

Inari: I….I can promise you that I will do my best as your Hero. There may be times we will argue. There may be times when we disagree. But I threw in my lot with you a long time ago. I’m sure that you know that you are one of the only others I care for with all my heart beyond Rozyus, whom I will always hold highest. And, even if something was to happen to me…..

*They place a hand over their heart, or rather, their soul*

Inari: Perhaps their souls before were not strong enough and shattered, but mine….I believe that, no matter what, my soul will survive. Even if it takes time, I will remain as your hero. All I ask is that you believe in me, too. As your hero, it would be wrong of me to ask you to keep your burden to yourself, mother. Allow me to help you carry it where I can.

*she sobbed once more, gripping them close again, barely audible apologies she repeated, mourning her fallen heros, each one a faded star all reborn in the Child that now towered over her. Holding the child felt like she were embracing her lost children again, what little of them that was left resided in this beeing. The thought managed to ease the pain some. And, gradually, the tears stopped. For the first time in a long while, she fell asleep peacefully. Her heart less heavy and the temporary peace was enough to ease the Child too. They carried her to her cot. Her expression looking somewhat familiar. He set her down and lay beside her. Not bothering to wrap their head around the situation, they just stared at her a while. She tossed and turned for moment, letting out a small moan, before setting into a deep slumber. The Child giggled.*

Inari: And to think that you are the ‘Mother’. You more resemble a child than I.

*Gently, they smooths her hair, their eyes softening slightly*

Inari [Inner Thoughts]: Indeed, if I didn’t know already, seeing you asleep like this, your relation to Rozyus is obvious. It would surprise me if no one had noticed before now. I’m glad that you will sleep well. I could never bare to see Rozyus’ face in pain, even if it it just one who bears resemblance to it.

Inari: Sleep well, Mother.

*They close their eyes and the world seems to flutter by.*

* Back in the Child’s tent, another conversation seemed to be be taking place.*

Rozyus: Tell Me! You’ve been stalling my progress for a while now, master, and I know you’ve been doing it on purpose! I'm sick of it! stop treating me like a child!
