--- Four Years Later ---
*The temple of Parame stood in its unchanging ambient state, yet even there, time had passed and, within it, while the building itself remained untouched by time, the people within it and the actions taken had indeed changed, as Inari discovers upon their return. For some time, their duties had kept them away from the temple. As such, returning only to discover rumours that they had stepped foot into the temple had drawn groups of gods, goddesses and attendants that were enamoured with the young god practically screaming at a glimpse of them was certainly a surprise.
Goddess 1: Oh, the young fox deity has returned! Do you think they look more handsome as the years have gone by?
Younger Goddess 1: Over here, Inari! Come play with us! *Grin*
Younger Goddess 2: Yes, we're having a gathering tonight, if you're interested? Oh, won't you attend with us? We would much like to have you! *Blush*
Goddesses: W-wait where are you going! Comeback!
Inari [Inner Voice]: Oh creator, there’s a swarm! Escape, escape!
*However, they were not known to be god of foxes merely because they acted as Inari’s messengers. Sly and skillful, Inari had managed to use the many back ways and secret passages that they had found along with Susanoo as young children. Soon, Inari was glancing back to make sure they had avoided the mass of fans hoping to find them and sighed, relieved, to discover that none of them had realised they had given the group the slip. A slight smirk on their face, the god quickly made their way towards the training grounds. If nothing else, the many fans tended to keep their distance from there. For another, if they were not mistaken, one of the few people that Inari was most eager to see would be found there*
Inari [Inner Thoughts]: Time seems to have flown. I still recall what it was like, back then, when I first met that boy. Rozyus…..such a walking contradiction. A child who would be so shy, who would easily put himself down, and yet would fly into a protective rage, showing his true strength and power when those he loved were threatened. Despite only knowing him for a short time, it was as if we had become bound by a red thread of fate. I have indeed missed him. I do wonder if the same could be said for him? We made a promise, of course, but considering the circumstances, being separated for so long due to our respective training, I wonder if he remember the promise we made? Or if he’ll even be pleased by this visit? After all, I didn’t inform him that I would be returning so soon.
*Absently, Inari glances at a hand they hold before them, flexing their fingers thoughtfully as they consider the powers they currently hold*
Inari [Inner Thoughts]: It is amazing to think, after all, that in a mere four years, things could change so much to me with my own training. Of course, I’m not arrogant enough to feel that I am the strongest or fastest of gods, but by own abilities are certainly far greater than they once were. And to think, Mother believes that I’ll be worthy enough to become her Hero. The honour of such a title is not something that just anyone can obtain. Yet in a few years, that title will belong to me. How much has changed from when I first gained life. The world was so daunting back then...Not to say that I have reached a limit. I know that I have more potential. Perhaps I am aiming to emulate man more than my deity self, but they say that man is capable of infinite possibilities because they do not believe they have or ever will reach the ‘perfection’ of godhood. Perhaps that is why I was chosen?
*Inari clenches their fist*
Inari [Inner Thoughts]: Regardless, if I want to be able to take on the responsibilities of Hero, along with my deity duties and be able to help support those I hope dear, there is no possible way that I would allow myself to be limited. I will continue to grow stronger and more flexible, even beyond gaining the title. Otherwise becoming ‘Hero’ will mean nothing.
*Shaking off their thoughts, Inari continues towards the training grounds at a leisurely pace, taking the time to observe their surroundings, to listen now that their ears were not assaulted by the screams of fans. It brought a small smile to their face, recalling several times they had made mischief with Susanoo, and the peace certainly made them feel a little more hopeful that perhaps Rozyus and his kin were at least experiencing some of it themselves.
Assuming, of course, that this was not mere wishful thinking.
Shaking off that more sardonic thought, they quickly picked up the pace to the training grounds. They did not wish to had their return marked by negativity, especially when this was to be a happy occasion.
Finally, they pushed open the doors and stepped inside, looking around to see if their assumption was correct.
….
There was a clanking of metal, as swords were met countless time with such verity that sparks could be seen. A few of the children that were training, stopped to observe the sight. A veiled figure and a familiar gentleman were exchanging blows. The veiled figure seemed to be barely keeping up.
Voice: Your movements are too stiff! Straighten up you back… TOO SLOW!
Veiled Figure: Damn you, old man!!!
Voice: Huh. Pitiful. After a full weeks training, you STILL can barely keep up. Shameful.
Vailed figure: SHUT UP!
Voice: Sad. I guess this is a far as you go. What a waist of my time. How do you expect to fight for others when you can’t even protect yourself? All you’ve been doing is swinging your sword around like a barbarian!
*The older man moved sporadically to get behind the veiled figure kicking them to the ground.*
Veiled Figure: I told you to shut up! How am I supposed to hit you anyway? You’re moving too fast!
Voice: Excuses!
*The veiled figure jumps to his feet, grabbing the cracked sword that had fallen close by.*
Veiled Figure: I’m done with this.
Voice: Giving up so soon? Shameful.
Veiled Figure: Who said I’m giving up!
*The Veiled Figure began to move in a rhythmic pattern, faster and faster until only an after image could be seen. His blade seemed to cut the air, which let out a faint crackle and a faint storm of pelles whipped thought the grounds*
Voice: Oh, you’re getting serious now? I suppose I should do the same.
*The Voice seemed to repeat the same steps that the veiled figure have done, though they seemed more refined, more elegant. Raising his sword, his form seemed to give off a bright glow, similar to that of lighting.*
Voice & Veiled Figure: It’s over!
*The veiled figures image came into focus a he swung down onto where the older man seemed to be moving*
Voice: I win!
*The image of the man had been an illusion and, as the veiled figure’s sword began to swing down, the image dissipated, the tip of his blade rested at the veiled figure’s throat.*
Veiled Figure: ...Damn it…..
Voice: Too bad, my boy. Better luck next time. Take a five minute break, then come back. Unfortunately, there is ‘still’ much left to learn.
*Inari looked on in awe at the display. It seemed familiar somehow….Had they seen it somewhere before?*
Inari: That move….I’m sure of it. I’m sure I’ve seen it before...But what is it?
Parame Voice: It's called a flower walk my dear. Shall I explain?
*Inari paused ever so slightly, however, far used to the Mother Goddess speaking to them in their mind, they didn’t bother trying to locate her, knowing that if they had not physically sensed her, she was not going to be anywhere they could see her even if he looked around*
Inari [Responding Thought]: The Flower Walk, huh? Such an elegant name for a lethal move. Though if one wanted to be poetic, I suppose the flying blood might be referred to like the scattering of petals. Poetry aside, please, continue, Mother.
Parame voice: *Chuckle* Indeed. It's a rhythmic step sequence that allows the individual to quicken their speed, usually leaving an after image and or a physical remnant of the users… chi, if you will. In the boy's case, his namesake’s petals. And in his father's case, pure energy in the form of light. You’ve seen it before, when he had that little ‘freak out’ years back, no?
Inari [Responding Thought]: Ah, yes, I wondered why it seemed so familiar. That was where I had seen it before. Thank you for clearing up my confusion. Still, that doesn’t sound like something you could usually just do by instinct...How long has Rozyus been learning that?
Parame Voice: ...Since the first day he needed to run… It's a form of defence known to their tribe, you see. When they are threatened, or an opponent it far too close, they can uses that little trick to get some distance. What his father is attempting to do is teach him how to use it offensively… But how effective that will be is anyone's guess.
Inari: [Responding Thought]: Actually, in terms of strategy, it could be very effective indeed, so long as it’s not overused or outright telegraphed. You could finish off a battle before it even begins if you take them off guard, or simply turn the tides. I suppose, in the end, it will also depend on how he combines it with strategy, as well as what opponent he’s facing or the situation. Against one who knows that move and has centuries of experience over him, it would be extremely difficult to use the move and not be countered. Anyone else, however….Well, you did say that strategy and tactics was part of his…..emperor training, was it?
Parame Voice: Very true, but still, you forget that the boy is only half. His movements are ‘clunky’ for a reason. What would have a full blooded member of his tribe a few month has taken this child almost a year to learn. Though his speed has picked up, the movements leave much to be desired. Whether that will be resolved with the right motivation, practice or strength of will, is anyone's guess… Oh, but alas, I need to depart. It seems I need to prepare for a surprise guest. Adue, my sweet child.
Inari [Responding Thought]: Then I will keep you no longer. Until later, Mother.
*The mental presence of Parame seemed to dissipate. With nothing else to keep them distracted, and the spar in the training grounds finally at a stand still so that Rozyus could rest, Inari decided that this would be the best time to at least provide a little of that ‘motivation’ that Parame had mused about by announcing their return. With a smile on their face, they silently made their way forwards, gently catching one of the remaining petals that had been dithering in the air since Rozyus’ attack*
Inari: How strange it is that a dance of death and the falling of blossoms could be seen as one and the same. In a moment when one stares down the blade of another, life can be as fleeting and fragile as the petals that scatter to the wind…
*Hearing that almost flirty tone, the veiled boy whipped round in its direction.*
Rozyus: Big brother ‘Nari!!!!
*The boy dropped his weapon and flung himself in the other’s arms, burrowing his face into their chest.Though the veil was mostly opaque, Inari could just about make out the boys smile and form.*
Rozyus: Oh big brother, I’ve missed you so!!!! Welcome home! *Cute smile*
Inari: I’m home. And I’ve missed you as well! Though I’m curious about the new feature.
*Absently, Inari toyed with a corner of the veil, cocking their head curiously*
Inari: Ah, would this be a loophole to the ‘no hoods’ law? Or have I missed more than I thought these last four years?
*The boy gently removed the young god’s hands from the veil, tenderly linking their hands together.*
Rozyus: Yes and no. As long as it doesn't hide fully my figure, and it is not a ‘hood’, I’m recognisable. There’s the loop hole. ‘N also… people of my tribe tend to go through… stages, as you can see.
*The boy gestured to some of the other children, some looked more beastial than others, some more hairy than one would typically associate with a child.*
Rozyus: *Sigh* I’m in the more beastial phase. I would rather not scare the others. Uncle allowed this much until it falls off. Hopefully soon.
Inari: Ah, so a combination of a loop hole and ‘tribe’ culture. I understand. Yes, the High Courts could not argue against that, especially when you are still following your ‘sentence’. After all, a veil is by no means a hood. *Smirking* One would think that they would consider their wording a little better. Still, a failure in their wording is a boon for yourself.
*For a moment, they paused, before gently squeezing the boy’s hands in return*
Inari: Speaking of such things, have you been well? I was worried while I was away that terrible things could happen and I would not be able to help. Not that I was much aid back then...despite that, one does not stop worrying, you know?
Rozyus: Truthfully, I’ve been so busy making sure my siblings are safe, fed and warm that I have hardly had time to care about what others say. Mother’s plans for the Children of Two have been set in motion and I had the task of making sure it ran smoothly. Saying that, as soon as I do have a break, it’s disrupted by this… and emperor training. For the most part, I’m done with it, apart from the combat and strategy stage…. Can’t get no dam break around here.
Inari: Understandable. I can relate, though most of my own responsibilities are my own fault. After all, I am one of those whose deity duties cover far more than a single area, despite my young age. And then, of course, further training on top of that. Still, some would see fighting and strategy to be a break, if only because they feel it is fun. There are reasons for those who decide to become gods of war, or chaos. Of course, it’s not something that everyone enjoys. I do find myself somewhat curious as to how we would fair against each other these days. I was assigned your spar partner back then, but with the passing of time, many things can change in terms of fighting ability.
Voice: Technically, you're still his sparring partner. And welcome home, young one.
*The older man looked over the pair, an idea swimming though his mind.*
Voice: You have one more fight in you, boy?
Rozyus: NO.
Voice: It’s either that or laps.
Rozyus: I rather run. So how far do I have to run? Anythings better than fighting you again.
Voice: …..
*Inari, quickly catching on to what the older male was possibly hinting at, raises a bow and tilted their head*
Inari: Then how about with myself? I’m curious as to how we would fair against each other.
*With a put-upon sigh, they look away, toying with a strand of hair from their ponytail as if in disappointment*
Inari: But I….suppose if you would rather run, I cannot fault you. I just hoped to spend a little more time with you…
Rozyus: Eh! Oh, but what if something happens to you?!!! What if your beautiful face gets hurt? I couldn't live with myself if anything happened!!! N-’n’ we could spend time together after I'm done running… yeah, yeah. That way you won't get hurt. *Nod nod.*
Inari: *Fake tears* Does this mean you think I’m weak?
Rozyus: N-NO! Never! I j-just don’t want to see you in harms way, ‘coz i care about you, as my good friend. Y-ya!
Inari: I promise you, I’m strong enough that I believe I can at least protect myself from too much harm. Besides, this would only be a spar, not a fight to the death *Innocent smile* Besides, I trust you. I know that I will not be hurt.
Rozyus: *Blush* T-that smile is lethal you know that…. N fine so long as it's short and a one point match, I'm fine.
Inari: Of course. I know you’re tired. Don’t worry. First blood?
*With that, the two took positions. While Inari knew it was a little unfair, especially since Rozyus was tired after matches and, other than travel weariness, Inari was far more fresh. However, it was obvious that the boy’s father wanted this last match to occur and Inari was somewhat curious. Besides, in battle, it was very rare that people would be fully and well rested when a fight began.
Facing each other, Inari’s hand moved to their katana, while Rozyus moved to his own blade. For a moment, they were still, watching each other for an opening. Knowing that, with the other hesitant to hurt Inari, the other would not break the stillness, the fox god knew that the first movement would have to be theirs. Without even breaking the serene expression, if only so Rozyus wouldn’t know their intention, Inari darted in, drawing the sword as a strike at the same time with one single movement. Despite Rozyus’ tiredness and surprise at the aggressive start, the boy managed to block, but Inari stayed on the offensive. If they wanted the boy to get passed his mental block of harming them and to get serious, even fight with instinct, then they could not hold back, though they made sure not to go for the few split second openings. It would end first blood matches too soon. Besides, Inari knew that Rozyus was good enough to notice that they purposefully ignored the spot. If that would gain enough of a spurt of anger to make him fight seriously, Inari would be pleased.
A forceful clang of their blades as both attempted to overcome a deadlock warned Inari that they had succeeded. Their lips stretched into a grin, eyes glinting with pleasure that they were drawing out the boy’s spirit against them. Time to stop playing around.
The match, unfortunately for Inari, didn’t go on for a long time after that, but the flurry of movement, of blades clashing and flashes of colour as they danced made every split second count. Finally, Inari saw the final move that Rozyus had been taught, but, having seen it from a distance, Inari was not about to let the boy get up the needed speed. Seeing that tiny glint of pure exhaustion in the other’s eye, Inari used that second to dart in and a tiny scratch appeared on the other’s arm.*
Voice: Enough.
*The older gentleman walks towards the pair, clapping. He seemed both amused and pleased at the young ones display.*
Voice: Well done, young fox god. It would appear your training has yielded fruit. It seems in the short few month since I’ve seen you, your swordsmanship has improved greatly…. Boy, you could learn a thing or two from their display.
Rozyus:... Can I go to bed now? I can barely stand…
Voice: *Sigh* just go we’ll pick up where we left off tomorrow.
Inari: Uh, whoops? I suppose I got a little more into the fight than I thought. I’ll help you, Rozyus. It’s my fault you’re so tired after all. Also, thank you, sir. You flatter me with the compliment. I’m glad that I have improved so much in your eyes. I hope to continue to grow stronger. Please keep watching me.
*They give a quick bow to the older man, a student to a master, before carefully moving to Rozyus’ side, sheathing their blade once more before offering a hand to their friend, a smile on their face*
Inari: You did really well. Thank you for indulging me.
Rozyus: It’s fine. Shall we get going before he old man drags us back? *Takes hand*
*Laughing softly, Inari pulled the other to his feet and helped to steady him, leading him away from the training area*
Inari: I seem to be doing quite a few getaways today.
Rozyus: were shall we go? Your room or mine, i know you must be weary from your travels. I’ll make us some treats if you wish or-
Inari: If I made you make treats for us, I might just help to cause the first fire in the temple due to the cook passing out from exhaustion. Come, my room is closer. If you’re hungry at all, I can send my messengers to have something sent to us. As it is, I believe we’re both due a rest.
*The boy chuckled, linking arms with the god*
Rozyus: I’m not that... *Yawn* ...Ok, maybe I am, but still... Oh well, I’ll make something when we're more rested. Oh, but I should probably change from ‘this’ into something more comfortable. Don't suppose you have any spare clothes that will fit me do you? Anythings fine.
Inari: Of course. I don’t mind. You may have your pick. It’s a nice opportunity to actually see you in a kimono like we speculated back then. Well, yukata, since you’re going to sleep.
Rozyus: Ah!!! Oh… um… maybe I should go to my room after all. I keep forgetting I look like this….. It's ‘not a pretty sight’ after all. I wouldn't want you to be offended by the sight. Maybe next-
Inari: Nope, it’s already decided. We’re practically at my room now. Besides, I don’t mind. I’m sure I won’t be offended. Well, as long as you don’t get offended if I can’t resist the urge to fluff any fur I see, of course.
Rozyus *Blink blink* you're a strange one, you know that, big brother?
Inari: Oh yes. Aren’t we all?
*The young god opens the door for the boy, encouraging them into the room. It was far different from the last time he was there. The sense of childhood was disappearing for that place more and more as the years flew by. The boy tensed up as he pulled the vaile down covering his face. But with a hard yank form the young god the barely transparent fabric wa whipped from the boys fram.*
Rozyus: W-wha-?!!! N-no, give it back! Give it back! You’ll see! You’ll see!!!
Inari: …
*For a moment, Inari says nothing, only stares. Then, as if by instinct more than anything else, Inari was petting the furred face of their friend, eyes full of fascination, completely ignoring the fact that Rozyus had been fairly insistent that they should be disturbed by the image he was showing*
Rozyus: N-no, ah… Ah~
*The boy clung to the older child's chest, tears forming slightly as his tail began to wag profusely.*
Rozyus: W-what do you think you're doing!!!! N-no, don't pet me on my ear!!!~
Inari: Awwwww! *Hand to their mouth* You…..you’re adorable! So fluffy!
Rozyus: *Crying* Meanie, sadist, bully… STUPID ‘NARI!!!
Inari: If you don’t like it, I can stop….*Sorrowful look*
Rozyus: I-I didn't say I didn't like it... *Sniff sniff* But you didn't get repulsed by this? You really are weird, you know?
Inari: Yes, this is established. I should be considered god of weird, however the other gods vitoed it saying I have too many godly duties as it is.
Rozyus: I doubt the others would say a bad word about you. Your fan club always sing your praises. ‘N’, ‘n’ when they're around, I can hardly get close to you. Big brother’s mine - they should just back off. *Pout, puffs up cheeks*
Inari: Well, I’m sure some gods have plenty to say about me. They just don’t want to incur my wrath. Though there are always a few upstarts that don’t believe my so called reputation. Or forget it. I didn’t think it was so bad as to prevent such things, but Susanoo says otherwise. As for fans… *disgusted face* While I have nothing bad to say about my followers in the lower realms, the fans I have here leave much to be desired. If I had my way, I would very much prioritise my time with you over them any day.
Rozyus: *Perks up* You mean it, big brother?!!! You really want to spend your time with me? *Cute smile.*
Inari: Of course! *Smiling gently, fluffing Rozyus’ hair* You’re one of my favorite people after all!
*The boy nuzzles close to the young deity before giving them a peck on the cheek*
Rozyus: Yay! Today is a good day!!! *Grin*
*The young god blushed for a moment, rustling the boy's hair, before replying.*
Inari: Yes. A good day indeed.
